You’re dreaming of some breathtaking holidays but you have only a week left ? Why not flying to Iceland and taking the amazing self drive tour in the South and West region. A trip where you can pamper yourself, bath in hot spring water, in winter gazing the dancing northern lights above your head, taste local gastronomy, walk inside magnificent landscape, discover volcanoes, glaciers, impressive waterfalls and have this unique feeling to be alone in this world !

Highlights of this trip:

All year round trip. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy Iceland unique and diverse season from snowy winter with northern lights to bird nesting midnight sun and long days of summer.

On this self-drive trip, you’ll discover on your own, some of Iceland’s most exceptional natural sites such as the Golden Circle, the black sandy beach of Vik, a diverse and inspiring landscape for nature lovers.

We will adapt your journey depending on the number of days and your interest and create a personal tailor-made tour. Our aim is to let you discover Iceland at your own pace without rushing and try to keep you with a decent amount of kilometers to drive each days so you can enjoy each natural sites to their maximum.

D1 : Keflavik – Hveragerdi

(drive aprox. 90 kms) On your arrival at the airport you’ll be picking up your car and discover on the way the beautiful Reykjanes peninsula with its geothermal activities and endless lava fields. Make a stop at the Blue Lagoon for a relaxing time before driving to the nice village of Hveragerdi.

D2: Hveragerdi – Kirkjubæjarklaustur

(drive aprox. 220 km) Today you discover the jewels of the South Coast of Iceland, its impressive waterfalls, black sandy beach and stuning basaltic colums. Night in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

D3 : Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Jokulsarlon

(drive aprox. 120 kms) Enjoy a day in Skaftafell national park where you can hike in the national park and have a walk on the glacier with crampon and an experienced guide. Continue to the glacial lagoon of Jokulsarlon where icebergs from the glacier, melt and roll down into the sea. From here, there is an outstanding view of the ice cap. Night in the surrounding.

D4: Jokulsarlon – Hella

drive around 300 km) Enjoy some hours around Jokulsarlon and it’s amazing glacial lagoon before driving back long the South coast you can make some other stops along the way. Night in Hella.

D5: Hella - Golden Circle – Borgarnes

D5 Hella – Golden Circle – Borgarnes
(drive aprox. 220 km) Enjoy the day in the famous Golden Circle where you will discover three of the most amazing sites in Iceland. Walk in the national parc of Thingvellir listed at Unesco’s World Heritage, be surprised and amazed by Geysir and admire the beautiful and powerful waterfall Gullfoss. Night in Borgarnes.

D6: Snaefellsnes

Visit Snaefellsnes peninsula and its highlights, being one of Iceland’s most ancient areas, is nevertheless full of recent lava fields and formations – a peculiar mix that produces a peculiar landscape. Your journey brings you to the receding glacier and volcano of Snæfellsjökull – the place that inspired Jules Verne’s novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” to amazing coastal walks. An excursion to see whales is possible. Night at the same place.

D7: Reykjavik

(Drive aprox. 70 km) Enjoy a free day in the beautiful city of Reykjavik, have a stroll at the lake and the harbor and of course walk along the colored streets. Free time in the evening.

D8: Vol international

(drive aprox. 50 km) Free time in town before driving to the international airport and flight


Good to know

 Itinerary : on this self-drive tour we create a tailor-made itinerary following the length of your stay in Iceland and your personal interest according to our knowledge of the country as travel agency. A day by day itinerary will be given on a indicative basis and accommodations will be booked for you in advance. We provide you with all necessary maps and a trip information package with practical information that allows you to enjoy your vacation in the best possible way; tips on where to buy food, good restaurants, places to go – places to avoid, inescapable sites, our personal knowledge of Iceland and our experience as a local travel agent.

Accommodation : We usually have a range of B&B and guesthouses selected for their confort, charm and welcoming atmosphere and of course their localisation according to your itinerary, even some part of Iceland may have restricted choice. We recommend to book as early as possible in order to have the best possible choice. We generally avoid hotels and standardized accommodations. It’s also possible to request other type of accommodation, 3/4* hotels or camping ! Contact us for any specific request.

Transport : For this self-drive we usually advice to rent a berline instead of a 4×4 only necessary on gravel roads for the highlands but not needed on paved road, except if you request something special.

Important note : driving between end of September to end of April

You must be aware that travelling on your own in Iceland between end of September and end of April can lead you to encounter some difficult climatic situation such as snow, ice on road (especially in the North and East of the country) and a changing weather. In the worst scenario you can experience some snow or sand storm and temperature below 0°C. If you’re driving in Iceland, those conditions can impact your itinerary and your driving. Always check forecast and road conditions before driving.

Climate : because of the rough and changing climate in Iceland see below a list of recommended equipment to bring with you for this trip. You can except temperature between 0° and 20°C from April to September and from +5 to -20°C from October to March.
