D1 : Arrival

On your arrival at the airport you’ll be picking up your car and drive to Reykjavik were you can stop to fill with all you need for your trip into the Highlands and the uninhabited land of Iceland. You’ll then drive to the Golden Circle where you’ll spend your first night.

D2: Kerlingarfjoll through the Kjölur

Visit the Golden Circle and three of the most famous natural sites in Iceland: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. It’s time now to leave the touristic spot and head into some more remote area. You’ll be driving along the Kjölur plateau, located between two glaciers. It’s an amazing region for hiking and for enjoying geothermal activity. Night near Kerlingarfjoll.

D3 : Hveravellir and the North

We continue our drive along the Kjolur plateau and stop at Hveravellir, an amazing oasis where hot springs, solfatares, sulfur and mud pools explode from the ground to create a colorful place. There is again a chance to bath in this wild place. When we get to Blonduon lake we take another track less visited and drive across a beautiful valley a green heaven before getting to another desert the Sprengisandur. The name sprengja means “to ride a horse to death” and picture where we are entering. Our destination for the night is the hut of Laugafell with a natural hot spring to warm us.

D4: Trollaskagi

This morning you have a unique chance to do some white water rafting in the cold water of the Jokulsa river or directly heading to the nice fishing village of Siglufjordur. Back to civilisation you can refill with petrol, food, chill out or explore the fjord. You can go in the afternoon on a whale watching excursion from the small village of Dalvik, before ending your day in Akureyri, the Capital of the North.

D5 and 6: Myvatn

You’ll drive in direction of Myvatn, a great place full of geothermic and volcanic activities. You can stop en route to the beautiful waterfall of Gadafoss. You’ll spend 2 days in Myvatn and have a chance to see lava formations of Dimmuborgir, walk on top of the Hverfell crater, visit Namaskard and Krafla caldeira… If you want to go back into the highlands again, a drive to Askja is a must (allow one full day for this excursion)!

D7: Sprengisandur

It’s time to go back into the Highlands along the Sprengisandur a vast and uninhabited area is a desert region of Iceland where no vegetation grows. Its name itself describe it well, the sand trail.

D8: Landmannalaugar

You’ll spend this day in the amazing region of Fjallaback a natural reserve located in the South of Iceland. Landmannalaugar is part of it, with its superb mountains in rhyolite, its volcanic rocks which gave those unique colors and is a true paradise for hikers.

D9: Eldgjá

Stop at the canyon Eldgjá before getting back on road n°1. Pass the beautiful sandy beach of Vik and spend the night in Hveragerdi.


You’ll drive back to Reykjavik enjoy one day discovering the northernmost capital full of cultural places, cosy bars, tasty restaurants…
