As London cannot be summed up to Buckingham Palace and Paris to the Champs Elysées, Iceland is not only Geysir and the Golden Circle. This beautiful country offers a panel of regions to be discovered: secluded fjords, desert beaches, powerful waterfalls, placid lakes, tumultuous rivers, impressive mountains, rugged lava fields and gigantic glaciers and volcanos.

D1 : Reykjanes and lava field

(120km – 75mi) At your arrival in the international airport, you will take your rental car and reach your accommodation located at the heart of the Golden Circle.

D2 : Golden Circle

(100km – 62mi) For this first day you will discover the famous Golden Circle and its three iconic sites: Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir. You will walk among lava formations where the American and European tectonic plates spread apart, you will admire the natural beauties of Thingvellir National Park, you will head to Geysir and and enjoy the power of nature. Finally, you will walk along the banks of Gullfoss, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. The night will be spent in Borgarnes, on the coastline.

D3 : Snaefellsnes

(150klm – 93mi) This second day will be the opportunity to discover the peninsula’s coastline with the black cliffs of Öndversarnes contrasting with the bright orange of its lighthouse. There, you can admire many bird species (cormorants, puffins…) nesting in the cliffs. You will also have the opportunity to discover Kirkjufell, one of the most famous mountains in Iceland, and its peculiar shape. You will end the day in the quaint fishing town of Stykkisholmur and spend the night there.

D4: Flatey island

(100km – 62mi) You will leave early in the morning for a boat ride to the island of Flatey that you will explore while your car will be waiting for you on the other side of the bay. This will be spent observing the many bird species living on the island far away from civilization. You will reach the other side of the bay around 6 pm and you will still have an hour to reach your next accommodation located near the famous cliffs of Latrabjarg.

D5: Latrabjarg

(40km – 25mi) The entire day will be devoted to observe the millions of sea birds nesting in the gigantic cliffs of Latrabjarg, puffins are the stars of course, but you will also discover other species such as guillemots and gulls. The surroundings have as well some magnificent white sand beaches where you can walk alone in the world.

D6: Isafjördur

(210km – 130mi) You will start your exploration of the west fjords and drive towards their northern capital: Isafjordur. This region is less beaten by tourism and remains completely pristine, you can even manage to spot some arctic foxes. On the way, take the time to admire the magnificent waterfalls of Dynjandi. You will reach Isafjordur in the afternoon and you will still have the time to explore the town. The night will be spent there.

D7: Holmavik

(220km – 136mi) Today you will hit the road again and drive along new fjords, each of them offering diversity and dramatic landscapes. Your destination for the night is Holmavik, a little town known for its witchcraft museum. You will discover many interesting facts and stories about magic and Icelandic traditions. The night will be spent in the surroundings.

D8: Vatnsnes

(200km – 124mi) You will drive on route 1 again, before leaving it to reach a track following the coast of Vatnsnes peninsula. Along the exploration of this peninsula you will stop to enjoy the majestic rock formation Hvitserkur. You will have the time to walk along the beach most likely under the eyes of the seals colony living there. Night in the surroundings.


(260km – 161mi) On your way to the capital of the north, you will stop in Glaumbaer to visit some traditional peat farms before enjoying lunch in the small fishing town of Siglufjordur. In the afternoon you will be expected for a whale watching expedition of 3 hours. Finally, you will spend the end of the day and the night in Akureyri and its surroundings.

D10:Myvatn Lake

(100km – 62mi) On the way to Myvatn, stop at the beautiful waterfall of Godafoss (the waterfall of the gods). The region of Myvatn offers several interesting sites. The area is located 65°6 north right on the Mid-Atlantic ridge emerging in Iceland. This ridge spreads apart the American and European tectonic plates 2cm a year… this is why volcanism is so active in this region constantly moving. You will end this day with a relaxing time at Myvatn Nature Bath, in blue waters rich in silica and 39°C (102°F). Night in Myvatn.

D11:Myvatn lake

Today you can continue exploring the area, with sites such as crater Hverfell, caldera Krafla, mud puddles of Namaskard and more. Same as the day before, you will enjoy a relaxing moment at Myvatn Nature Bath. Night in Myvatn.

D12:Dettifoss and Est fjords

(250km – 155mi) You will start driving again, towards the canyon of the Jokulsa river, to discover Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. When you reach the east fjords, you will enter the elfish realms, where you can hike between mountain and ocean. Many bird species live there, as well as arctic foxes and deer. Many streams and little waterfalls will astonish you while cascading on the slopes covered in moss and bog cottons. You can also take the time to enjoy the pebble beaches and the small fishing establishments, real curiosity of the region.

D13:East Fjords

(260km – 161mi) Descend towards the south, do not miss an exploration of Egilsstadir, capital of the east, there you can discover the surroundings of lake Lagarfljot, the superb waterfall Hengifoss and the biggest forest in the country. Until you reach Djupivogur you will have many opportunities to stop and discover scenic quaint little towns. Night in the surroundings of Djupivogur.


(170km – 105mi) Today you drive to the famous glacial lagoon of Jökulsarlon, and its unforgettable landscapes. Take the time to watch the icebergs reaching the ocean. Night spent in the surroundings.

D15:National Park Skaftafell

(190km – 118mi) You can discover Skaftafell National Park, where lies one of the ice outlets of glacier Vatnajökull. This park offers wonderful hikes, and an unforgettable possibility to walk on the glacier. Driving again on route 1, you will meet the impressive lava fields of Laki. Night in the surroundings of Vik.

D16:Black beach and waterfalls

(180km – 112mi) This day you will have the incredible opportunity to admire the beach of Vik, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Then you will discover Reynisfjara and its impressive basalt columns, as well as the steep cliffs of Dyrholaey. Finally, you will end the day by the waterfall of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Night in Reykjavik.


For this last day, you will have the time to explore Reykjavik. Take a stroll in the long streets, admire the colourful houses, discover the old harbour which was hosting whalers and fishing boats in the days of old. Be sure not to miss the famous monuments, such as the concert hall Harpa, the parliament house Althingi or the majestic cathedral.

D18:Flight Departure

 Indicative itinerary: For this self drive tour we will create a complete itinerary accordingly to your likes and hopes about Iceland and to our deep knowledge of the country. You will have an indicative day by day schedule, and the accommodation will be booked for you. We will also give you maps and a road book allowing you to travel relaxed: resupplying locations, good restaurants, tourists traps to avoid, mandatory sites and alternative locations of interest…

Vehicle:For this kind of self drive tour, except in winter time, we recommend to rent a city car instead of a 4WD. The 4WD are usually needed on the highlands roads and are not needed on asphalted roads. But if you expressively require a 4WD we will comply.

Accommodation during your stay:Usually we use quaint guesthouses or Bn’B, selected for their comfort, their nice staff and their location according to your itinerary. In some places of Iceland, the choice is limited, therefore you should book as early as possible. We avoid as much as possible hotels and standardized accommodations. You can also request to chose other accommodation types, such as 3-4* hotels, or camp sites (summer only). Please feel free to contact us for any specific requirements.
