Touching the genesis of earth, a tour made to discover Iceland and to take part in the most memorable, closest to the north pole and most unique marathon in the world!

The tour

The circumference of Lake Myvatn is 42km, therefore the road following it is the ideal spot for a marathon in Iceland. More over, the location of this marathon, allows it to be the closest one to the arctic circle! Kilometre after kilometre, runners will discover breath-taking and diverse landscapes under an ideal temperature varying between 10°C and 20°C (50°F and 68°F). Finally, close by the summer solstice of June, the region is never dark, offering a unique marathon under the midnight sun. This marathon in Iceland remains convivial, friendly and is not like one of those 5 000 people bloated marathons.

Besides this marathon unique in the world, this travel is the opportunity to discover a concentrate of Iceland with very active volcanic areas around the lake. And is also a good chance to enjoy relaxing time in daily hot baths.

You will have also the possibility to explore the canyon of the Jokulsa river and Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe, to meet the whales in Husavik or many other fascinating things close by.

The region

Lake Myvatnis located in the north of the country at a latitude of 65°6, right on the mid Atlantic ridge emerging in Iceland. While growing, this ridge spreads apart the American and European plates with a speed of 2cm a year. This explains why the volcanic activity is so strong in the area.

The beautiful lake is a haven for anatidae (ducks, swans and geese) since 17 species use its waters to settle and breed. This haven mixes American, Eurasian and Arctic species, and turn the area into a paradise for birding. For the contemplative mind, the site is exceptionally diverse and offers some of the most beautiful and strangest landscapes in the world. Imagination is always stimulated by these strange shapes, and the trolls, elves and fairies dwelling there.

A stay around Lake Myvatn is always an immersion in a powerful and primitive nature where men somehow managed to dwell and keep old traditions alive, such as bread baking in the warm ground, fishing on ice… Myvatn’s region offers and incredible diversity in a relatively small area, allowing us to reduce vehicle usage to a minimum, for your own enjoyment. The time of the year concerned by this marathon in Iceland tour is close by the summer solstice, a tempered season offering to Myvatn’s sky the crimson burn of the midnight sun.

Good to know

Indicative itinerary:for this self-drive tour we will create a comprehensive itinerary according to your needs and to our knowledge and experience of the country. You will receive an indicative day by day schedule of activities and spots, and we will book in advance all the accommodations of your stages. We will also give you maps and a road book in order to offer you all the information needed to enjoy your stay as much as possible: resupplying locations, good restaurants, tourist traps to avoid, mandatory spots to see, alternative and original places…

Domestic flight:Your flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri is operated by Air Iceland from Reykjavik domestic airport to Akureyri.

Vehicle:For this kind of self-drive tour, we recommend a city car rather than a 4WD unless you clearly ask for it. 4WD are needed for the inner tracks of Iceland and are not of any use on normal roads.

Accommodation during your stay:Usually in quaint guesthouses or B&B, picked for their comfort, their quality of service and their location relatively to your itinerary. Note that in some locations of the country these accommodations are scarce, so an early booking is recommended in order to have the best choice possible. In any case we avoid hotels and standard accommodations. However, there is always the possibility of other accommodations such as 3/4* hotels or camp sites (only during the summer time).
