This trip will let you discover of the most beautiful region in Iceland and take part in a memorable race, the closest to the Arctic Circle, in the heart of amazing volcanic landscapes, on the rift!

The Marathon

The circumference of Lake Myvatn is 42 kms, and the road that goes around, is the perfect location for a marathon, the closest to the Arctic Circle! Over the kilometers, the runners will discover sumptuous and varied landscapes under an ideal temperature, generally between 10 and 20 ° C. Finally, with the approach of the summer solstice in June, live a unique experience, under the midnight sun with no night. A marathon where the organization remains on a human scale, in a friendly atmosphere, far from the big cities marathons of 5,000 people or more.

The region

Lake Mývatn is located in the north of the country at a latitude of 65 ° 6, right on the active mid-Atlantic ridge that is emerging in Iceland. This wrinkle, or rift, moving away separates and moves the American and European plate from each other at the rate of 2 cm per year…. this is why volcanism is so active in this region which remains in permanent formation.

This beautiful lake is a sanctuary for anatids (ducks, swans and geese) 17 species breed there, American as well as Eurasian and Arctic: a paradise for bird watching. For the contemplative, the place is of an exceptional variety and it offers among the most beautiful and weirdest landscapes on planet Earth. The imagination is constantly challenged by the strange shapes of the landscape and trolls, elves and other fairies inhabit it… without a doubt.

A stay at Lake Mývatn represents an immersion in a very powerful and primitive nature but where man has known how to develop and preserve traditions such as baking bread in the hot ground, raising sheep, fishing on ice… The Mývatn region offers incredible diversity in a small area and thus avoids long journeys by vehicle. The period chosen is during the summer solstice, a mild season where the sky of Mývatn is continuously lit by the famous midnight sun.
