This trip is for people who wish to live a more authentic journey, in a wilder and less touristy region. By exploring only one region of the country, you will not be able to “see everything” but you’ll still have the possibility of discovering all the facets of Iceland except the glacier, with few kilometers to cover each day and without changing accommodation.

This stay is ideal for those who like to take their time traveling, looking to deepen the places they discover, want to rest or simply taste the life in the fjord. Our agency is based in this beautiful region, you can also discover our retreat center for well being.

This itinerary is ideal for a family trip or more thematic trips such as birdwatching, geology or the meeting of invisible worlds and geobiology.

Highlights of this trip
  • Little distance to travel. During this trip, you will be based in the heart of the Eyjafjörður fjord, by the sea. From there, you can explore the Mývatn region and set off to discover its active volcanism, explore the Trollaskagi peninsula (troll peninsula) rich in historic sites, the island of Hrisey, a true haven of tranquility, the Godafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls… In summer, you can also explore part of the highlands, an area accessible only by 4×4 to Laugafell for a hot bath surrounded by nature or to the beautiful Aldeyjarfoss waterfall in the heart of the largest desert in Europe. Eyjafjörður is also beautifully situated to watch the northern lights in winter or the midnight sun in summer.

Departure & Return Location

Keflavik airport

D1: Arrival in Iceland and transfer to the North

Upon arrival at Keflavik International Airport, you get a bus through the lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula to Reykjavik Domestic Airport where you will board for a 45-minute domestic flight over the highlands of the country. You will be landing in Akureyri airport and collect your rental vehicle and drive only a few kilometers to your accommodation for the next 6 nights, located in the Eyjafjörður fjord, with a superb view by the sea.

D2:Whale watching and discovery of the Trollaskagi peninsula

Like every morning, you will enjoy a rich breakfast while overlooking the fjord. In the morning, you embark on a whale watching excursion to observe the humpback whales in the fjord, one of the best places to see them in Iceland. In the afternoon, you’ll have the possibility to visit Siglufjörður, where we recommend a visit at the interesting Herring museum. At the end of the day, the best option is to dip into the hot tub in the Hofsós swimming pool and return to your accommodation.

D3:Hiking and bath in Myvatn

Departure for Lake Mývatn. Along the way, you can make a stop at the beautiful waterfall of Godafoss. Mývatn is one of the region where active volcanism and geothermal energy are the most visible. Several walks are possible in the heart of amazing volcanic sites such as the solfatares of Namaskard, Krafla caldera, Hverfell crater, the lava castles of Dimmuborgir or the Höfdi forest. At the end of the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing bath in the warm waters of the natural baths of Mývatn, ideal after a day of walking. Return to your accommodation.

D4:Exploration of Eyjafjörður fjord

Spend a day in the fjord with several visits possible. On the other side of the fjord, go hiking in the vicinity of Grenivík, discover the traditional turf houses of Laufas farm, stroll through the streets of Akureyri, enjoy a time in the beautiful botanical garden, or why not, have a chat with some Icelanders, by bathing in its magnificent swimming pool (sauna, hot baths, games for children).

D5:Volcanism in Myvatn

Depart for a second day in Myvatn because you didn’t have time to visit all the sites yet. You can also go to Dettifoss waterfall, the most powerful waterfall in Europe and, depending on the season, drive up to the Jokulsa gorges from the North to the very enigmatic horseshoe-shaped site of Ásbyrgi. 

D6:Discovering the island of Hrisey

New day in the fjord. You can take a ferry to explore on foot Hrisey Island, the pearl of Eyjafjordur. The hike on the island you’ll have many views of the fjord and the sea. It is often an opportunity to see whales from the coast, as well as the rich fauna and flora of this island, which looks cut off from the world. Those who prefer to delve into the history of the country can reach the troll peninsula (Trollaskagi) to visit Holar, the former bishopric of the country or the very beautiful complex of traditional farms in Glaumbaer.

D7:Back in Reykjavik

In the morning you take a domestic flight back to Reykjavik. You reach your accommodation located in the city center, which allows you to explore all day, the city on foot. Stroll through the colorful alleys of the city center, visit the harbor, the cathedral or the new Harpa cultural center, astonishing with its modern architecture. Why not doing some shopping and enjoying in the evening, the atmosphere of its various cafes, bars and restaurants.

D8:Return flight

Bus transfer from your accommodation to the international airport for your international flight.

  • Itinerary : on this self-drive tour we create a tailor-made itinerary following the length of your stay in Iceland and your personal interest according to our knowledge of the country as travel agency. A day by day itinerary will be given on a indicative basis and accommodations will be booked for you in advance. We provide you with all necessary maps and a trip information package with practical information that allows you to enjoy your vacation in the best possible way; tips on where to buy food, good restaurants, places to go – places to avoid, inescapable sites, our personal knowledge of Iceland and our experience as a local travel agent.
  • Domestic flight: the flight between Reykjavik and Akureyri is carried out from the domestic airport of Reykjavik by the Icelandic company Air Iceland. For this flight you can embark at no extra charge with hand luggage of 6 kgs and hold luggage of 20 kgs.
  • Transport : For this self-drive we usually advice, outside the period from October to April, to rent a berline instead of a 4×4 only necessary on gravel roads for the highlands but not needed on paved road, except if you request something special.
  • Accommodation: We work as a priority with accommodation such as charming guesthouse or B&B, chosen for their comfort, hospitality and location, in relation with your itinerary. As the choice can be limited in some regions of the country, it is important to book your stay as soon as possible to benefit from the largest possible offer. In any case, we avoid standardized hotels. It is possible to choose other types of accommodation during your stay, 3/4 * hotel or camping. Contact us for any specific request.
  • Period to travel: we offer this itinerary all year round.
  • Important note, stay between mid-October and mid-April: If you decide to travel to Iceland between at this period, in winter therefore, you may encounter difficult climatic conditions, with snow, icy roads (especially in the North and East of the country), and variable weather. Due to weather conditions you might not be able to access certain sites. In the worst case, you can get snow or sandstorms and temperatures sometimes well below 0 ° C. If you drive yourself in Iceland, this climate can affect your itinerary or driving. We will be there to help and advise you on your itinerary.
