After picking up your car, you drive to your accommodation located in the geothermal town of Hveragerði. If your flight arrives early enough, we recommend to make a few stops along the Reykjanes peninsula. Driving distance approx. 100 kms.
Today explore the famous Golden Circle. Admire the powerful Gullfoss waterfall, the always surprising Geysir and the beautiful Thingvellir national park a Unesco gem. Night at the same place. Driving distance approx. 200 kms.

Today you’re entering the region of the East Fjord. Full day to explore those tiny towns nested between steep mountains and small harbors. The fjords are full of historical reference and used to be the most populated area thanks to fishing times. Driving distance approx. 260 kms.
On the way to the north, make a quick stop in Egilsstaðir the “capital of the East fjords” before continuing along the scenic road that leads to Mývatn with en route a stop at the canyon of Jökulsárgljúfur (Iceland’s Grand Canyon!). There you can enjoy Europe’s most powerful waterfall Dettifoss. Night by lake Mývatn. Driving distance approx. 250 kms.
Mývatn is one of the most volcanic area in Iceland. You’ll have a full day to hike, explore and discover its surrounding, a chance to observe some lava formations, craters, mud pools, solfatares… In the evening enjoy a relaxing time in the Mývatn Baths. Driving distance approx. 20 kms.
You’re heading to the West in direction of Akureyri with a stop at Godafoss waterfall. After a couple of hours in the capital of the North it’s time to embark for a whale watching experience. Night in the charming town of Siglufjörður or its surrounding. Driving distance approx. 150 kms.

You end this ring road drive in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. You have the full day to have a glimpse at its old center, visit some museums, enjoy a stroll at the lake and the harbor and of course walk along the colored streets. Reykjavik is a great place if you like to go out as it’s full of restaurants, cafe and bars to enjoy ! Driving distance approx. 70 kms.

Itinerary : on this self-drive tour we create a tailor-made itinerary following the length of your stay in Iceland and your personal interest according to our knowledge of the country as travel agency. A day by day itinerary will be given on a indicative basis and accommodations will be booked for you in advance. We provide you with all necessary maps and a trip information package with practical information that allows you to enjoy your vacation in the best possible way; tips on where to buy food, good restaurants, places to go – places to avoid, inescapable sites, our personal knowledge of Iceland and our experience as a local travel agent.
Transport : For this self-drive we usually advice to rent a berline instead of a 4×4 only necessary on gravel roads for the highlands but not needed on paved road, except if you request something special.
Accommodation : We usually have a range of B&B and guesthouses selected for their confort, charm and welcoming atmosphere and of course their localisation according to your itinerary, even some part of Iceland may have restricted choice. We recommend to book as early as possible in order to have the best possible choice. We generally avoid hotels and standardized accommodations. It’s also possible to request other type of accommodation, 3/4* hotels or camping ! Contact us for any specific request.
Important note : driving between end of September to end of April
You must be aware that travelling on your own in Iceland between end of September and end of April can lead you to encounter some difficult climatic situation such as snow, ice on road (especially in the North and East of the country) and a changing weather. In the worst scenario you can experience some snow or sand storm and temperature below 0°C. If you’re driving in Iceland, those conditions can impact your itinerary and your driving. Always check forecast and road conditions before driving.
Climate : because of the rough and changing climate in Iceland see below a list of recommended equipment to bring with you for this trip. You can except temperature between 0° and 20°C from April to September and from +5 to -20°C from October to March.
