Tour Details

6 complete days of trekking in the Icelandic east fjords, deep into the Elvish realm according to Icelandic tradition. Trek in a small group with gear transfer by a 4WD from a mountain hut to another. A breath-taking hike between sea and mountains, from Seydisfjördur to Borgarfjördur Eystri. A little known part of Iceland that remains truly pristine.

Moderate level

Highlights of this trip:
  • This trek is guided by the founders of Alkemia, Harpa and Jean-Marc, which allows to enjoy Harpa’s talents for music, singing and story telling of folklore and stories of old.
  • Beauty of a pristine nature:The “Elvish Realm” offers a large diversity of landscapes: desert beaches, dramatic fjords, lost dales and mist covered mountains. This trek gives the feeling to be the only human on earth, sharing the land with the local fauna: deer, migrating birds and, with a bit of luck, the stealthy arctic fox.
  • A trek in a remote location, in all quietness:For those already in love with the more and more crowded region of Landmannalaugar, famous for its treks, these east fjords are ideal. They are quieter and offer a stunning resemblance with similar coloured rhyolite mountains, but offering also hikes between sea and mountain in old landscapes, carved by glaciers. These rock formations, alongside with the ones of the north west, are the oldest of the country. You will discover, with your guide, the tales of Queen Snotra and monster Naddi. You will understand rapidly why, according to tradition, this location is considered as the Elvish realm of Iceland. This location has also partly inspired the novel Karitas of author Kristin Marja Baldursdottir.
  • A trek in a small group with transfer of your gear: This tour aims to be enjoyable and comfortable. For you to enjoy it as much as possible, we limit our guests to a small number (12 pers. top). For the same reasons, we offer you to transfer your gear to the next mountain hut on our 4WD, not carrying your gear will help you enjoy more the sceneries and feel more in communion with nature.

Itinerary

D1 : Lodmundarfjördur: Altitude change +500-500m (+1650-1650ft). Duration 6H

To reach the beginning of this trek, you must be in Egilsstadir on the morning of day 1, 9:00h at the latest. To do so, you can come from Reykjavik by a domestic flight across Iceland (1h), or we can set up an independent tour for you, with road book and vehicle/accommodations booking, before and/or after the trek.

Domestic flight from Reykjavik to Egilsstadir on the morning. If the weather is clear, you will have a great opportunity to fly across Iceland and see glaciers, the caldera of Askja and mountain Herdubreid. Your guide will welcome you at the airport and will drive you for 30km towards the magnificent fjord of Seydisfjordur. Beginning of the hike towards the mountain hut of Lodmundarfjördur. The path leading there offers a beautiful sight on the fjord, descending along a lovely dale and following the coastline.

D2 : Kaekjuskörd: Altitude change +700-700m (+2300-2300ft). Duration 6H

Exploration of a magnificent and remote dale, then ascend to the mountain pass where we will enjoy a breath-taking sight on Bakkagerdi. It will be a good opportunity to admire the numerous and interesting geological formations. Night in the mountain hut of Husavik.

D3: Hvitserkur: Altitude change +400-400m (+1300-1300ft). Duration 6H

Today, we will discover the mountain of Hvitserkur, then we will descend towards the beach of Breidavik and its mountain hut.

D4: Breidavik: Altitude change +200-200m (+650-650ft). Duration 5H

We spend one more night in the same mountain hut to explore a magnificent dale surrounded by lakes, and to have the time to discover the bay of Breidavik where we might enjoy a bonfire. This place is completely out of time and gives the feeling to reach the edge of the world where mist often hangs on mountains and stimulates the imagination.

D5: Bakkagerdi: Altitude change +600-600m (+2000-2000ft). Duration 6-7H

New hike across mountains of rhyolite before reaching the desert beach of Brunavik. This beach will be an excellent break before bypassing the gigantic mountain of Svartfell and reaching the town of Bakkagerdi. Night in town and possibility for Jacuzzi.

D6: Storurd: Altitude change +200-700m (+650-2300ft). Duration 7H

Hike towards the extraordinary site of Storurd boasting blue-green lakes embedded into screes and the feet of mountain Dyrfjöll. Way back to town by the mountain and the dale following it. End of the trek and transfer to Egilsstadir

Good to know

The itinerary can be modified according to the weather conditions; your guide remains the only one in charge all along the trek.

Baggage:We ask you kindly to take only a maximum of 15kg of gear for the trek (both bags included), however, it is possible to store your other gear in Reykjavik if you stay for longer in Iceland.

For the group’s conviviality:nothing mandatory, but we always suggest everyone to bring a speciality of their home land.

Participation:All the members in the group are supposed to help the guide by assisting in cooking and dishwashing.

Extension of your stay:Please contact us! You might not come back to Iceland any time soon, and if you can spare a few more days, we advise you to extend your stay a little bit, in an independent trip to discover another region or just to enjoy more of the northernmost capital city in the world. We can arrange 1 or 2 days more in Reykjavik for you to really submerge in its relaxed and original way of living, to enjoy its excellent coffee-shops and wonderful book-stores, to discover its fascinating little museums and art galleries, and to relax yourself in its swimming pools, spas and original night life.

Be careful to choose your extension early on, because modifying your plane ticket on site can be pricey and even sometimes impossible.
